Critique Night

Posted on 7th December, 2009 by admin

This wednesday sees the Limerick Camera Club Critique Night.

The critique night is anonymous. You don’t have to say anything about your image.

Everyone in the Club can bring along One image and have it considered by the group.

There is a huge depth of talent in the club and this is your opportunity to avail of everyones opinion.

Hopefully every image will be considered and commented on covering (in no order):

Technical Merit - Is it taken the way the photographer intended and presented at it’s best?
Composition - Storytelling, is it balanced, where is the eye led in the picture and is there conflict and use of colours?
Content - Subject portrayal and creativity.
Emotion - Every opinion varies but think ‘Do I like it?’

There are as many opinions on this list as there are on photographs, this is just a guideline.

Please bring your image along on the night as a print or on a memory key for projection. If you choose to have your image projected create an image 1024 pixels on the longest side.

The evening should be great fun and useful to everyone from beginner to old-timer.

Remember; you may not agree with any of the points raised but it will help you to consider every opinion. For best results why not bring along an image you are not pleased with but cannot put your finger on why.

New Club Projector

Posted on 27th November, 2009 by Iñaki Hernández

At last an end to the long dark night of people looking aghast at their murky images onscreen and explaining pathetically “this ought to be a really vibrant yellow,” and “there’s a really interesting object in the shadows, but you can’t see it here!”

Last week the new club projector arrived, and had its first assignment projecting Sean Dunne’s splendid images on Wednesday night. It’s an Epson 1730W, powerful AND portable.  It did a very good job - brightness, vibrancy, colour and contrast were pretty impressive, and it helped to do real justice to Sean’s images. Let’s wish it a long and happy life in the club!

Sean Dunne Visits Limerick Camera Club

Posted on 27th November, 2009 by Iñaki Hernández

We all greatly enjoyed the visit of Sean Dunne LIPF last Wednesday evening. Sean showed a range of his work, and spoke with great modesty. His landscapes show a classical and strong gift for composition, and a sensitive and delicate eye for light and form and colour. He is blessed also with the gift for early rising (a gift not often handed out by the fairies at Irish cradles), and we saw many wonderful scenes with early morning fog and mist.

Particular evidence of his skill in seeing an image was a set of images from Kildare, where perfectly ordinary elements of a flat landscape were made striking and beautiful by time of day, composition, and clever camera position.

He finished the evening with a really impressive series of People shots, beautifully executed and processed, full of wry humour, pathos, and quirkiness.

Many thanks to Sean for making the journey down from the South Kildare Photography Club!

Distinctions sitting

Posted on 13th November, 2009 by Iñaki Hernández

A distinctions sitting is when individual members of camera clubs from all over the country present panels of their work to Irish Photographic Federation judges, for awards at various levels, from a good competence in composition and exposure, to advanced awards for more experienced photographers.

Lots of people in the club hold Distinctions, at the various levels of the award (it’s the LIPF/AIPF/FIPF you see after someone’s name). It is a really good learning experience to go and watch the distinctions panels being assessed, especially if you are thinking of going forward for a Distinction yourself, next time round!

There’s a lot of very fine work to be seen, and you can get a feel for how it all works. The date for the next Distinctions sitting has been changed to Saturday 28th November 2009. The venue remains the same: The Tipperary Institute, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.Distinctions judging will begin at 11:00 and continue until all panels have been adjudicated. There will of course be a break for lunch.
