Wednesday’s camera club meeting will take the form of a night shoot.
We will meet in the Curragower Bar at 7PM and will organise groups as you arrive.
This shoot will be weather dependent, so far it looks like it’ll be showery.
Worst case we’ll find ourselves in a Pub
Don’t forget to bring along your cameras and tripods

There was a big turnout last night to enjoy an evening with Tony Murphy, who teaches at NCAD, and whose photography is really variedand accomplished. Tony gave us a perfect mix of images, instruction and advice about composition (move about! find other viewpoints!) and the importance of spending money on really good glass. And this technical gem: the importance of hanging Mars Bars in trees, to get your children to gaze in the direction you want them to!
He structured his talk around a small selection of images grouped thematically. Themes included People, Street, Landscape, Strobist, Interiors, Commercial, Abstract, and Low Light Photography. This enabled him to give a lot of time to talking about the making of each shot, which was really instructive. He emphasised the importance of trying out new ideas and techniques, and said at the outset that what he is photographing is the light, and the subject comes second to the light. His strobist work encouraged even this writer, who does not even possess a flash, to think that acquiring one might well expand what she can do in outdoor photography.
During the set-up and introductions, he let a slideshow of his images run onscreen. As he was deliberately confining himself to a small selection of themed images to talk about, it was a great way of showing the range and beauty of his work as a whole. And it would make you want to see them for longer! But you can always look on Flickr!
At the end he showed us his typical workflow as he processed a RAW file, emphasing the satisfaction there is in making sure you get your shot right in-camera. He explained the importance of working on 16-bit files, and of saving your precious work as a TIFF.
He is very humble and self-effacing about what he is doing, but the quality, creativity and vision in his work speaks for itself!
Many thanks to Tony for making the long journey to Limerick in the middle of his working week, which already involves a staggering mileage. It was one of the most enjoyable and instructive evenings of the year.

Paul is a quondam Chairman of the Limerick Camera Club, but he has been so busy developing his award-winning photography business over the past two years that we have seen very little of him of late. This was a wonderful opportunity to see what he has been doing in the interim.
The creative imagination he brings to bear on his image-making is very impressive. Not very many people have this degree of conceptual imagination, and fewer still have the technical skills to realise their creative vision as successfully.
Paul showed us a wonderful range of image-making, from commercial shoots (including his European medal-winning shot of a local band in silhouette) to portraits. A set of fashion shots were wonderfully composed and styled.
His portrait work is outstanding in quality, and shows the evident good relationship he has established with his sitters of all ages. Their faces are open and at ease.
He talked about the importance of making images “for your life” - that are in tune with the people, and relate in a real way to their lives. This can only be done by spending time with people, getting to know them, and discussing their ideas.
It was really wonderful to see how much Paul’s skills and imaginative vision have been able to develop in just a few years. And as he said himself, he is only starting!
Many thanks to Paul for showing us where his photography is going - he has an outstanding gift, and we wish him continued success and an ever-increasing freedom to realise his vision!
